The aim of the new wayfinding system is to achieve a harmonious overall concept of architecture and the signage system. The wayfinding system picks up on existing designs, incorporating the color scheme of SC Freiburg's corporate design. The use of the Grotesk typeface "Trade Gothic" (sans serif) ensures narrow letterforms that maintain excellent legibility. A hierarchy is established to capture and structure the information provided.
The new wayfinding system at Stadium SC Freiburg stands out with its own identity and originality, going beyond traditional navigation systems. The stadium's architectural design, characterized by an orthogonal basic form and roof, serves as the guiding principle for the wayfinding system. Its clear language of form welcomes and informs visitors and fans from the outdoor areas, such as parking lots, bus stops, and trams, leading them seamlessly to the entrances and through the stadium's promenade to their seats.
The wayfinding system is realized using colored alupanels with colored foil, offering a visually striking and cohesive experience. The dimensions of the signage elements are tailored to the specific requirements of each location within the stadium.
Key features of the wayfinding system include high-contrast black or white texts, arrows, and pictograms against the colorful backgrounds. The Trade Gothic font is employed in various sizes to establish a hierarchy that effectively organizes the provided information.
Functionally, the wayfinding system operates simply, safely, quickly, and intuitively. It not only guides and accompanies fans but also creates a tangible sense of space, fostering identification and a strong sense of identity.
The design process for the wayfinding system began in February 2020, and the official opening, along with the first football game, took place in the summer of 2021. Extensive research underlies the design, ensuring optimal legibility and visual impact.
